Development-ready means another qualified person can act
An idea becomes useful to product development when creative intent has been converted into a controlled set of requirements, decisions and open questions. Development-ready does not mean production-ready. It means the next specialist can work without inventing the missing premise.
Define the job of the product
Begin with use. What must the product do for the customer? For apparel this can include climate, movement, layering, fit, care and durability. For a bag it can include carrying capacity, access, weight, security and strap behaviour. For footwear it can include fit, flexibility, traction and weather performance.
Without the intended function, technical decisions become aesthetic guesses.
Break the product into systems
A jacket can contain shell, lining, interlining, shoulder structure, pockets, closures and finishing. A shoe contains last, upper, sole, reinforcement and components. A knit garment is created through yarn, gauge, stitch, shaping, linking and finishing rather than cut fabric.
The architecture tells you which capabilities are required and which decisions depend on one another.
Translate references into requirements
Reference images are useful only when their authority is clear. Identify what each reference is communicating: proportion, material, colour, construction, fit, function, detail or mood. Do not silently transfer every property of another product into yours.
Separate inspiration from instruction.
A visual reference can guide one variable without becoming a specification for the whole object.
Make fixed and open decisions explicit
This is stronger than pretending every field is final. It tells the development partner where judgement is expected and where instruction must be followed.
Develop material and construction together
Materials change the manufacturing solution. Fabric changes drape, pressing and seam behaviour. Leather changes reinforcement, skiving and edge treatment. Yarn changes gauge, stitch definition, weight and finishing behaviour. “Premium material” is not an actionable specification.
A useful brief describes the properties that matter to the intended result and distinguishes nominated materials from open sourcing questions.
Turn proportion into numbers
Visual intent eventually needs dimensions: length, width, circumference, strap drop, heel height, pocket position, collar height or other category-specific points. Early values can be provisional, but the first physical iteration should be reviewable against more than “make it slightly bigger”.
Define observable quality
“Luxury quality” is not a test. Quality becomes actionable through observable conditions such as stitch consistency, yarn hand, linking, edge finish, leather grading, hardware finish, pattern matching, pressing, colour consistency and dimensional tolerance.
If a physical reference exists, state what it controls: aesthetic, fit, material, construction or approved-master authority.
Add the economic and quantity frame
Development cannot remain economically unconstrained. Establish intended retail, target product-cost range, approximate quantities and likely minimum-order exposure. These figures allow the development route to challenge an impossible combination of specification, volume and price before it becomes sunk cost.
Create the development record
Product intent and use context.
Drawings and reference logic.
Principal dimensions and fit/proportion intent.
Materials and components with status: final, reference, direction or open.
Construction and quality requirements.
Fixed decisions and development questions.
Target economics and quantity assumptions.
Sample objective, version and approval owner.
Development-ready is not production-ready.
Production readiness comes later, after sample approval, final materials, controlled construction, tolerances, cost and a reproducible technical record.
FAQ
Do I need a tech pack before developing a product?
Not always. If fundamental decisions are still open, a structured development brief can be more accurate. A tech pack becomes increasingly important as specification stabilises.
Can the manufacturer develop the product for me?
Some manufacturers provide real product-development capability; others are designed mainly for repeat production. Scope the role before assuming development is included.
How detailed should drawings be?
Detailed enough to communicate geometry and intended construction without pretending to resolve decisions that still require physical development.
When is the product ready for sampling?
When the sample has a defined purpose and the supplier has enough controlled information to build an iteration that can answer it.
